Luke 6:32-33, 35-36 says, “If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.”
This way of living is so countercultural in our society — especially in surfing, a sport that can often feel pretty selfish. It’s all about trying to get in the best spot, back-paddling others, or secretly hoping someone falls on a set wave so you can take it. And it’s not just about enemies — it can even happen with friends!
In our culture, it’s not natural to put others before ourselves or to give without expecting something in return. Loving the people we are competing against? That seems impossible. But the only way we can live like that is through the love of Jesus. When we pause and see things from His perspective, we receive His love and are able to give it away to others.
I know how frustrating a crowded lineup can be. Sometimes, instead of starting the day off right, a morning surf can end up ruining your mood and even your faith in humanity.
Here’s your reminder to shift your perspective to God’s! Every moment is an opportunity for Him to show His love to others through us. Sometimes, all it takes is pausing and realizing how lucky we are to be in the ocean. I’ve caught so many waves in my life — even the best ones fade from memory over time. Maybe Jesus wants to use this session not just for you, but to bless someone else — to turn an aggressive lineup into a stoked one. Encourage someone and make a new friend — who knows, that friendship might even lead to them coming to know Jesus too!
